It was on March 13, 2020 that the 3rd project of the Swiss artist was unveiled to the general public. 1 year after Le regard qui tue, a project categorized according to its creator as an "auditory film", the craziest artist in Switzerland puts the cover back for our greatest pleasure. What is certain is that with Varnish la Piscine, being misunderstood has never been so cool.

A strange universe perfectly assumed

While listening to the project, you will surely say to yourself: "It's nonsense!". Rest assured, this is completely normal. If you're looking for an ounce of logic, you've missed the point, if there is one. Yet Varnish warns us from the start. Indeed, in the title Palpatine intro / Twist amazone , song that opens the project, he tells us: "it's anything but it's not anything because it is, it's a feeling". It is therefore a real odyssey that Varnish la Piscine offers us, in a universe where the bizarre is the norm. Varnish the pool Varnish is one of those artists who does not submit to the rules imposed by the music industry. The ones that format artists and make them interchangeable. Far from it, in his world, it is he who sets the rules and not the other way around. However, some may blame him for not opening up and not making his music more accessible. In the last track of the project Illusion on Mauna Loa , he tells us this: "It's true, that I could make an effort, always in the West, But I feel better when I don't care too much to explain you". He is therefore aware that his music may seem quite encrypted to some. Like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, Varnish opens the doors of his world to us. It is up to us to follow it or not.

Various influences

Gradually, listening is more and more pleasant as the sounds and musical styles are varied. Varnish la Piscine touches everything. He does not hesitate to mix genres. Rap, pop, afro, rock: everything goes there and the result is very convincing. With such diversity, categorizing him as a mere rapper would be almost insulting. His main inspirations on the Hip-Hop side are: The Neptunes, an American duo from which Pharell Williams comes. We can also mention Tyler The Creator, not so much in the musicality but in this crazy side assumed. In the project, he also pays tribute to other artists such as David Bowie, Michael Jackson or Frida Kahlo. All these inspirations made him what he is today. They all have the distinction of having followed only their own rules. It is up to young artists to do the same, to assume their differences and to make them a strength.

The short film

The Killer Look, the previous project, was an "auditory film". This time again, Varnish la Piscine reiterates because Metronome Pole Dance Twist Amazone (very long title) is the soundtrack inspired by the short film Tales of the Cockatoo, released 3 weeks before the project and directed by Varnish la Pisicine himself. We follow "4 ordinary characters to whom extraordinary things happen". This is how this short film is summarized. This short film draws its inspiration from the science fiction films of the 50's: costumes, sound effects, sets… Everything is deliberately kitsch at will. Also, the actors do not hesitate to break the fourth wall and directly challenge the spectator. But even if it remains nice to watch, this short film is not essential to see to listen to the project. At best, it will make you laugh at worst it will remind you of the strange movies that play on Arte after midnight. To conclude, if you are looking to discover artists with universes of their own and who are not afraid to take risks, then go and discover Metronome Pole Dance Twist Amazone de Varnish the pool
