Unless you have been cut off from the internet for 1 week, it is impossible that you missed Toosie slide, Drake's new hit. As we know, the Canadian superstar is a regular hit. From God's plan to In my feelings, we no longer count his successes. For the youngest, the pop star decided to get up to date and use the latest trendy social network: Tik Tok.

What is Tik Tok

Tik Tok is THE new trendy social network. Created in 2016 by Chinese developers, the application is a real global cardboard. Indeed, there are no less than 1.65 billion downloads worldwide and more particularly among 10-29 year olds, who represent 40% of users. The principle is simple: create, view or share visual content. The videos are often short (15 to 60 seconds) which makes the content more enjoyable to watch and share. tik tok "Toosie slide": Drake's new hit explodes thanks to Tik Tok

Challenges

If Tik Tok videos are so viral, it's largely thanks to the challenges. Indeed, many dance steps, choreographies of all kinds have emerged on the internet since the creation of the application. Most of the time, it is Hip-Hop music that punctuates the Tik Tok. The challenges are often adapted from the lyrics of these musics. This new fashion phenomenon is therefore "free" advertising to artists, who are ultimately the big winners of these challenges. The best example is the title savage by Megan Thee Stallion and the "Savage Challenge". This challenge, mostly done by girls, allowed the single to rank 9th in the charts in the United States. She couldn't have asked for a better way to promote her latest project Suga, released on March 6.

And Drake in all this?

He who is already adept at viral dances (Remember Hotline Bling and the slew of diversion that this had generated) and international successes, it was predictable that Drake would add his grain of salt. This is how Toosie slide was born. The clip already has 13 million views 3 days after its release. Even if the title is more or less successful, we regret the fact that a superstar like Drake is forced to chase a buzz he does not really need. Indeed, when we examine the title more closely, we quickly understand that the title has the sole purpose of working on Tik Tok. In the chorus (which alone represents 80% of the song), we can hear the singer ordering us to raise our right foot and then to slide: "It right foot up, left foot, slide. Left foot up, right foot, slide." The sound ticks all the boxes of the specifications of Tik Tok: Simple choreography to reproduce, catchy chorus. Also, it raises a certain question. Indeed, when we see how Tik Tok reinvents the music industry and how great artists like Drake rush to create a song that will work for sure (because it meets a certain specification), we are entitled to ask ourselves: Is there a miracle recipe for making hits? Finally, Toosie slide is far from being the best song of Drake's career but it at least has the merit of existing. A heady chorus, a choreography simple to reproduce. Onething is certain: we have not finished hearing it.
