MGM studios unveil a first trailer for the biopic on American icon Aretha Franklin. Named Respect, the film will be released in theaters at the end of the year and will star Jennifer Hudson, in the role of the singer.

The "Queen of Soul" on the big screen

The icon sang Respect, Think, or I Say A Little Prayer. These titles have all become essential classics in the history of soul, rhythm and blues and jazz. But the one nicknamed the Queen of Soul will never see her biopic on the big screen. Yet before her death in 2018, Aretha Franklin knew a film project about her life was underway. She even took care to ask actress Jennifer Hudson to play her role. Called Respect, the highly anticipated biopic directed by Liesl Tommy will finally see the light of day at the end of 2020. Alongside the Oscar-winning actress are actors Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Marc Maron, Tate Donovan, Tituss Burgess and newcomer Sky Dakota Turner. This first trailer gives a glimpse of Jennifer Hudson as Queen of Soul through her performances on stage and her impact on the civil rights movement. Indeed, the film will return to several aspects of the artist's life: his childhood spent singing in the choir of his father's church to the immense career of international diva, and will highlight some of his actions for equality in the face of fundamental rights. The film was originally scheduled to be released in August, but was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. While it will have a restricted release in the United States on Christmas Day, before a full release on January 15, in France, the film will be released in theaters on December 30 without any particular limitations.
