1. A Day So White

Directed by Hlynur Palmason With Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Hilmir Snær Guðnason Released on January 29, 2020 Top of the best movies of 2020 according to the editors Effective acting, and an almost omnipresence of a very powerful silence. A perfect combination that mixes the aggressiveness and disarray of the main character, within his province and his family environment. By using the same content as a thriller to expand his story, the director suggests an atmosphere that is as calm and soothing as it is severe and icy. So, as fresh as the beautiful landscapes, many whites convey a deep resilience even without knowing what really awaits us. From beginning to end, emotions are strong, and actor Ingvar Sigurðsson offers a brilliant introspection thanks to his remarkable presence, which allows him to bring courage and accuracy to his character. Not to mention the few human links that this work brings us: the character and the spectator find themselves graciously accompanied by this little girl, a true source, finally, of this poetic walk. 1. Forward

Directed by Dan Scanlon With the voices of Chris Pratt and Tom Holland Released on March 4, 2020 Top of the best movies of 2020 according to the editors With its pitch, turned towards the fantastic tale. Its aesthetic is more reminiscent of recent productions of the parent company Disney or Dreamworks. Dan Scanlon's film seemed to be anything but Pixar. Especially compared to Pete Docter's Soul, released on December 25, 2020. Too bad, when you know how well these films manage to move the crowds. Finally, if we add to all this a health crisis that stopped it in its tracks. Eventually, Forward became the least profitable film for the studio, even being loss-making. Nevertheless, En avant was a very nice surprise, and inevitably it marks the spirits. By using role-playing as a scenario element, something rather rare in cinema. The film then presents an innovative side. Taking place in addition, in a universe populated only by fantastic creatures such as trolls, manticores, unicorns, etc … But mixed with the modernity that is ours. We follow a beautiful adventure, in search of a gem to complete a spell. Where two brothers, voiced by the superheroic duo Chris Pratt / Tom Holland in vo, and the inevitable Pio Marmaï with Thomas Solivérès in vf. Their goal is to spend one last day with their father, who died 16 years earlier. And this is where we find the little geniuses at Pixar, in what they know how to do best. Tell us an incredible story, and move us. A must-see for any fan of the studio but not only. Since this expedition makes us travel, and go through all the emotions, what more could you ask for this year? All posts by Thibaut D

1. In a garden that seems eternal

Directed by Tatsushi Ōmori Starring Kiki Kirin, Haru Kuroki, Mikako Tabe Released August 26, 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zR8xbERuzg Released in Japan in 2018, it was only in the summer of 2020 that French audiences were able to discover Omori Tatsush's ninth feature film. Far from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo's trendy neighborhoods, the story takes place in Yokohama at the home of Takeda-sensei (played by the late Kirin Kiki). While her cousin Michiko's path is already mapped out, Noriko doesn't know what to do with her life. Still single and without a job on the horizon, the young woman is constantly mocked by her family. To put on a good face, Noriko reluctantly decides to follow Michiko in her initiation to the tea ceremony. The rhythm becomes languid, the film becoming a call for inner calm, humility and patience. From the chashitsu (the tea room) exudes an incredible serenity. The rustling of the water gently splashing the matcha tea in the bowl, the delicate crumpling of the kimono on the tatami floor… Like Noriko, the viewer gradually immerses himself in the spirit of chadō (the tea ceremony). The slow, almost imperceptible camera movements create a powerful tension and underline each of the host's gestures. The viewer holds his breath, waiting for the approval or disagreement of the imperturbable Takeda-sensei. We are witnessing once again a great performance by Kirin Kiki, radiant and full of wisdom. Some may see the film as a caricature a little too forced of Japanese culture, whose sometimes rigid principles make it a curious object of fascination for the West. However, let us not lose sight of the importance of ancestral traditions in the eyes of the Japanese. Nichinichi kore kōjitsu is not an arrogant attempt to demonstrate the superiority of a culture that is foreign to us. On the contrary, it is simply a call for inner calm. On a rainy day, listen to the rain… All posts by Lucile Carpentier

1. Goodbye idiots

Directed by Albert Dupontel With Virginie Efira, Albert Dupontel, Nicolas Marié Released on October 21, 2020 Top of the best movies of 2020 according to the editors This year it is Adieu Les Cons by Albert Dupontel that I put at the top of my personal top. It may not be the best film of the year but it was the one that upset me the most. A real emotional bomb, and romantic, such as is rarely done in French cinema. All this, with a political reading totally adapted to our time. All posts by Hugo

1. Jojo Rabbit

Directed by Taika Waititi Starring Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Thomasin McKenzie, Roman Griffin Davis Released January 29, 2020 Copyright FoxJojo Rabbit Best Film Taika Waititi is the kind of director you really can't put in a box. Take a look at his filmography and you will see that this artist from New Zealand excels whatever the register. From his first intimate films such as "Boy" or "To each his own" to big productions like Thor: Ragnarok, Taika shows the extent of his know-how by exploring different subjects while bringing his personal touch. As part of his adaptation of the novel Jojo Rabbit, he decided, like Mel Brooks, Tarantino and Benigni, to approach the context of the Second World War through the prism of black humor. A bias that is not to everyone's taste but that allows to present a subject often adapted to the cinema from a new angle. "Laughter is never gratuitous in Waititi movies. It tickles your conscience." These are the words of the author of the novel Jojo Rabbit published in 2004. We can say in a way that the filmmaker prepares us meticulously by distilling several hints of humor here and there, then once we are cooked to perfection, he transmits us some bits of important messages that will make us think about themes. It is an effective process that allows him to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020. Jojo Rabbit's other achievement is its top-notch cast. Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell are fully invested in their roles, we can only praise their performances. We are particularly touched by young shoots like the young hero of the film who perfectly transposes this touch of lightness wanted by the filmmaker. His duet with the excellent Thomasin McKenzie is surprisingly accurate. Two actors that we will follow with pleasure in their next projects. In terms of originality, few productions have made equal play with Jojo Rabbit. The inventiveness and freshness of Taika's films are a pleasure to see in an increasingly complicated world.

1. Madre

Directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen With Marta Nieto, Jules Porier, Alex Brendemühl Released on July 22, 2020 Top of the best movies of 2020 according to the editors Rodrigo Sorogoyen and his co-writer, Isabel Peña, will have marked this decade with the very notable Que Dios Nos Perdone in 2016 and one of the most breathless films of the year 2018 with El Reino. But it is the year 2020 that will reveal all the talent of an eminent duo. First at the end of the year, with ANTIDISTURBIOS, a mini-series on a group of Spanish CRS, immersive and moving, broadcast for several weeks on Canal +, but also with Madre released in our theaters last July. Two formats testifying to the importance of a director who has established himself as one of the most talented on the continent. It all started with a short film in sequence, Madre, following Elena, a Spanish woman receiving a call from her young son alone on a French beach who will eventually be found… By a sexual abuser. Filmed solely from the point of view of the mother at the end of the line, the short film will be nominated for an Oscar. Madre, the film this time, tells us the rest of the story of this woman, played by the sumptuous Marta Nieto, years later in France. The story of a mother "orphaned" of a missing child, walking the beaches of the Landes for years. It is then that she meets the young Jean, Jules Porier in real revelation of the film under the direction of Sorogoyen, and that a nuanced and special relationship settles between the two. An intense and technically impressive film, the filmmaker filming the France in wide angle as few have done for many years. Madre is a passionate and exciting film provoking very special emotions that will not leave anyone indifferent. A fifth feature film marking the artistic freedom of a filmmaker, exploring genres and themes, admitting himself that Spain would never have let him make such a film , to discover absolutely and available recently on VOD, Blu-ray and DVD. 1. The Gentlemen

Directed by Guy Ritchie Starring Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam Released February 5, 2020 Top of the best movies of 2020 according to the editors The Gentlemen marks Guy Ritchie's return to the cinema that made him famous. It's simply his best film since Snatch. Whether in his style, writing, directing and artistic direction, everything exudes control. A perfect evolution, quieter and more mature, which offers a definitely pop story. Guy Ritchie reconciles with his first love , and submits an upgraded version of Scams, Crimes and Botany. Guy Ritchie resumes his good habits as a filmmaker, and magnifies what he knows how to do. The Gentlemen is the epitome of Guy Ritchie's cinema. The latter finds its rhythm, and separates itself from its psychedelic faults. With this film, he also tries to seduce his detractors, thus abandoning his stunning clipped direction, which had the gift of annoying more than one. Here, the director is much calmer than usual. This time, he shares a wiser, simpler, less flashy staging, which totally serves his story. Thanks to its precise writing and its crazy characters, The Gentlemen is a show destined to become cult, which has its share of unforgettable scenes. All posts by Aubin Bouillé
