Netflix's catalog is full of many survival movies. The editors of JustFocus have watched them for you and offer you a look back at five of them: Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight by Bartosz M. Kowalski, Romina by Diego Cohen, Survival Instinct by Jaume Collet-Serra, The Crypt by Bruce Hunt and In the Tall Grass by Vincenzo Natali.
1- Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight by Bartosz M. Kowalski
Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight, directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski in 2020, is just a series of references to other must-see films in the genre. A bunch of tech-addicted Polish teenagers attend a rehab course. With a guide, they will spend three days in the forest. Unfortunately they are not alone and are far from welcome. Not content to take up all the codes of the genre, Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight chains references after references to other films without really proposing anything original. From the dialogues of Scream to the murder of Deadly Detour 2, the surplus of what goes far beyond simple winks comes to raise the question of whether they are tributes or a lack of inspiration. When it comes to directing and acting, however, the film has nothing to be ashamed of. Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight is not to be classified among the bad survival movies, but will not leave a strong impression.

2- Romina by Diego Cohen
Romina is the first Mexican film directed by Diego Cohen in 2018. A bunch of friends go camping in the woods, while only one other camper is there. It turns out that the group of teenagers is far from safe and the little outing with friends ends in bloodshed. Romina is one of those films that is particularly difficult to watch because of the poor quality of all of its content. French voice actors perfectly fulfill their role as annoying and hateful teenagers to the point that the viewer is almost relieved when they disappear from the screen. The sound effects are absent to the subscribers, as well as the scenario that seems to have evaporated as soon as the group arrived on the campsite. If the first minutes suggest a decent film, Romina turns out to be very disappointing and is not even advisable for an evening to spend with friends.

3- Survival instinct by Jaume Collet-Serra
Survival Instinct is a 2016 American drama film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Esther). After finally finding the famous secluded Mexican beach that her mother often talked about, Nancy (Blake Lively – Emily Nelson in The Shadow of Emily) decides to stay there during the day to surf. While alone on the water, she is attacked by a great white shark and finds refuge on a rock that will soon be covered by the high tide. The only interest of Survival Instinct lies in the beauty of the images of the Mexican beach and the plastic of its heroine highlighted throughout the film. The rare emotional attempts of the scenario are based on more than worn springs and are not particularly developed. From the first minutes, the film clearly assumes its position and does not pretend to offer anything else to the spectators, thus avoiding any disappointment later and allowing the viewer to be satisfied with Nancy's delicate position. The shark's attacks are also not very realistic, but Survival Instinct nevertheless allows you to have a good time dreaming on its beaches.

4- Bruce Hunt's crypt
The Crypt is a 2005 American drama film directed by Bruce Hunt (The Matrix). Unexplored underground caves are discovered in Romania among the ruins of an ancient abbey. The scientists then hired a renowned team of diving cavers led by Jack (Cole Hauser – William J. Johns in Pitch Black) and his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian – Brock Houseman in The Sacred Bonds) to explore them. In The Crypt, the characters are so flat that the viewer cannot worry about their survival and sometimes struggles to distinguish them from each other without this hindering the progression of the scenario. The story itself is also quite classic and fails to create tension. The angle of the action was clearly preferred in the realization to that of the anguish of the depths. The monsters are worked but have not aged very well. The end of the film is impactful and original, but leaves an aftertaste of ridicule that ends up disappointing the viewer.

5- In the tall grass of Vincenzo Natali
In the Tall Grass is a 2019 American film directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Haunter). The film is based on the short story of the same name written by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill. While in the car, a brother (Avery Whitted) and his sister (Laysla De Oliveira – Echo/Dodge in season 1 of Locke & Key) hear a child calling for help from a field of tall grass. In order to come to his rescue, they in turn enter the field. The photography of Dans les hautes herbes is beautiful from start to finish. Many plans are very well constructed and impactful. The scenario is original, well constructed, easy to follow although it is not always obvious. The spectator is also quickly caught in the field of tall grass and tries to get the characters out. The actors are all excellent. In the tall grass is one of those survival films in front of which it is not possible to do anything else, otherwise you will constantly go back to see the previous shot and not miss anything because it is so captivating.
