With the release in the USA of the Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon, the box office is back on the rise! The reopening of cinemas in New York has boosted the numbers that are the best since the beginning of the pandemic.

Released in the United States since March 5, Raya and the Last Dragon dominated the box office this weekend! Taking advantage of the reopening of theaters in New York, the new Disney collected $ 8.6 million in 3 days. The spectators were therefore at the rendezvous to return to the cinema. But if this score is encouraging, it is a little less so for the firm with big ears. Indeed, last weekend, competitor Tom & Jerry won the bet, raking in $14.1 million in one weekend, the best start since the beginning of the pandemic. Thus, this mixed score for Raya is partly explained by Disney 's desire to release the film simultaneously in theaters and on its streaming platform, for $ 30. It should be noted that the giant Cinemark (second largest chain of cinemas in the USA after AMC), refused to broadcast Raya. The company wanted better financial deals with Disney, as was the case with Warner, which decided to release its 2021 films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. However, despite Raya's "underperformance", the United States had the best weekend at the box office since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The website Deadline reports that attendance at New York theaters jumped 525% this weekend! A real breath of fresh air for the sector, even if the reopening is subject to strict rules. Indeed, a maximum capacity of 25% of the usual capacity and a limit of 50 spectators per room have been set. New York theaters were able to reopen on March 5 after a year of closure due to the health crisis. After Los Angeles, New York is the country's second largest market in terms of cinema attendance. It is noted that Raya and the Last Dragon, which features an Asian heroine, does not work very well in China. With 8.4 million greenbacks collected on Chinese soil, the feature film does not gather crowds. This is also the case in the United States. The new Disney was actually beaten by Tom & Jerry, which raked in $12.4 million upon its release. As pointed out by Variety, Raya is also dominated by Minari in Korea. This drama, Golden Globes for Best Foreign Film, is worn by Steven Yeun (Glenn in The Walking Dead). On the side of our home, Raya is scheduled for April 14. We hope that our cinemas will be open by then. While waiting to discover the latest Disney film, we invite you to (re)watch the trailer of Raya and the last dragon: https://youtu.be/ZsERcKc3PxY
