The My Hero Academia series has been delighting French audiences since 2016. Published by Ki-Oon editions, it has constantly renewed itself from the classic codes of shonen to switch to a darker tone. The whole is based on the journey of its hero that would not have denied Jospeh Cambell. With this dazzling 32nd volume, the manga tackles its final story arc (according to the author) and brings together all the threads of its rich plot including those developed in independent feature films.
On the edge of the precipice
In the previous arc, the heroes of My Hero Academia faced the most terrible of alliances. The Supervillain Alliance led by Tomura Shigaraki and the Superpower Liberation Army led by Re-Destro merged to form the Paranormal Liberation Front. Tomura Shigaraki, the heir of All for one finds himself at the head of this huge terrorist organization. To counter it, the heroes of Japan mobilized all their forces to attack the thousands of members of the organization and prevent Tomura from completing its transformation. The confrontation resulted in a Pyrrhic victory. The heroes eliminated some of their enemies but their losses were heavy. Especially Tomura and his lieutenants fled and All for One began to merge with his successor. And armed with his new powers, Tomura organized the escape of a large part of the supervillains imprisoned in Japan. Chaos spreads in the streets, the population turns away from heroes, some of whom throw in the towel. Hope now rests on a handful of defenders grouped around the last able-bodied heroes, Yuei's and Deku's students.
Deku's Odyssey
This opus of My Hero Academia deepens Deku's itinerary. Having discovered the secret of One for all, he now learns to master the alters of other holders of power. To do this, he learns even more about the links between his alter and that of his nemesis. He also discovers the life, the choices, the flaws of his predecessors and understands why he was chosen by All Might. The author finds a very beautiful and intelligent explanation. This quest also comes at a price. He becomes the priority target of All for one who seeks to capture this alter who has eluded him for so long. Deku is therefore forced to make a choice. No longer wanting to expose his friends, he decides to go it alone. Worthy of a ronin, he will himself lead his double quest, personal and heroic by arresting as many villains as he can. This gives very strong, sad passages where we see our hero change physically at the risk of appearing in the eyes of the public as a villain. To hope to win, Deku accepts the ultimate sacrifice, namely to plunge into the shadows and test the strength of his convictions.
My Hero Academia : a very current story
The last feature film had already shown how this fiction was inspired by the doubts of our contemporary society. This new arc deepens it by first staging a situation of chaos. When heroes fall, when public authorities falter, the population withdraws in on itself and tries to take the law into its own hands. A part of the citizens in fact turns into "vigilantes" without worrying about the moral code and treats any owner of alter as an enemy. And beware of the unfortunate person whose alter gives him a strange appearance. She will become the ideal scapegoat. This opus also deals with the versatility of public opinion and manipulation by images. It only takes one hero to stumble for suspicion to spread and for the public to take any information at face value. The author of My Hero Academia elegantly castigates our addiction to pre-chewed information and our ease of judging without hindsight. He makes his story a twilight of idols where our myths collapse to the rhythm of false and true revelations.
A captivating atmosphere at the service of an expanding universe
This 32nd volume perpetuates what makes the immense quality of this series: its atmosphere. Its graphics, its cutting, its diversity prevent the reader from abandoning his reader once a volume begins. Author Kohei Horikoshi and his assistants maintain this incredible balance between insane fight scenes and moments of pause, investigation, introspection serving the narrative. The creator of My Hero Academia even allows himself to often break the 4th wall to explain its cutting, reveal the secrets of Deku's attacks or recall the identity of this or that character crossed 10 volumes before. This always keeps the reader focused on their story. It is also unfolding in bold and unexpected new directions. Indeed, My Hero Academia likes to multiply winks to pop culture figures. For example, this relentless killer is a symbiosis between Deadshot and the Black Widow. The series shows how much it owes to comics as to shonen. The other interesting expansion is based on the deep links between the manga and feature films, especially the 2nd and 3rd. The author has always insisted in his comments on his desire to maintain the coherence of his vast universe. He reinforces it in this volume by citing the heroes of the rest of the world (present in the 3rd film) or by relying on the complementarity between Deku and Bakugo (at the heart of the finale of the 2nd film). This 32nd volume opens in apotheosis this new (and final arc?) of this already cult manga. Virtuoso, dynamic, profound, he fascinates, questions and foreshadows an epic ending.
