Japan inspires many periodicals that make the richness of the displays of newspaper kiosks. Often specialized, these publications have managed to maintain themselves despite the vagaries of the press and competition from the web. Like the famous magazine animeland, they have constantly reinvented themselves to offer original content. However, since May 2019, a new publication is offered to the curious and lovers of the land of the rising sun: Japan Magazine. Its creators have chosen to fill a void by offering a generalist quarterly. 14 issues later, their magazine has become a reference and we explain why.
Eclecticism
This is the promise inscribed on the cover: "to discover a fascinating culture". Each issue published for 3 years has perfectly fulfilled this contract. The editorial line offers sections focused on travel, cuisine, society, otaku culture, arts and history. This vast field makes each issue fascinating, such as the last, No. 14, which offers both an artistic trip around Mount Fuji, an article on samurai women, a presentation of the place of the LGBT community or the discovery of the work of dyers in Kyoto. And this is just a sample of the writings that explore both all the richness of Japan but also its lesser-known or darker aspects such as the question of suicide or the drama of Minamata.
Originality
Japan has fascinated France since the nineteenth century. Writers, journalists, artists have produced many works to explain this fascination. With the emergence of manga and the web, writings have multiplied. How then to write about a country about which so much has been said? It is this challenge that the editorial team takes up by adopting original points of view. For example, number 12 focuses on "Tokyo, at night", offering a nice peregrination in the sprawling metropolis. In issue 10, you will find an article about Japan's involvement during the World Premiere. The magazine also offered on 3 different issues advice for those wishing to go to Japan.
Photographs
To say that this magazine is beautiful would be an understatement. It has beautiful photographs superbly laid out, diverse and captivating. Whether for the passages on geography, art or cuisine, care is taken to make the written word visible. This is reflected in issue 10 devoted to abandoned places or in the previous one presenting Japan along the water. These illustrations beautifully support the sometimes disconcerting points of view presented (see the article on fruit madness in Japan in issue 14).
Pen
Another strength of Japan Magazine lies in the quality of the articles offered. They are indeed very well written, full of lyricism, humor and sensitivity. Rich in knowledge, their reading is very pleasant, fluid. We let ourselves be lulled by the sentences managing to make the authors' passion for the subject matter felt. These articles also benefit from the diversity of stakeholders. About fifteen editors participate in each issue to which are added speakers such as Japanese diplomats or the director of the Alliance Française de Sapporo.
Density
Three months separate each magazine. A delay that is explained by the quality of the articles, their diversity and which is largely compensated by the length of each issue. The editorial team offers 132 pages of pure pleasure that can be enjoyed. The articles are both dense and perfectly digestible. Japan Magazine finds the perfect balance to address enthusiasts and curious people. And we can only salute the work of the authors, proofreaders to maintain such a level of quality. Every quarter, Japan Magazine offers rich, diversified, original, very well written and superbly illustrated articles. This publication has therefore become in three years a reference, a must for any lover of Japan. Find here an article for those wishing to learn Japanese.
