If gravity disappeared, what would become of society twenty years later? Starting from this very original premise, Joe Henderson, the showrunner of Lucifer here writer and the cartoonist Lee Garbett propose Skyward, a high-flying adventure saga published by Hi comics.
Skyward: Gravity is the world before
Twenty years earlier, the universal law of gravitation disappeared, causing the death of millions of people thrown to the limits of the atmosphere. Since then, a part of humanity has been able to adapt. Willa, born just before, lives as best as possible by hovering – literally – from one occasion to another while her father refuses to leave his house. In the first volume, the girl discovered that her father, far from being a failure, may have found a solution to restore gravity. In this second volume, she leaves with a friend to follow a trail in Kansas City. Still traumatized by the death of her father, she is also pursued by the culprit: the powerful former associate of her father who, for greed, refuses to see gravity return. Can we sacrifice everything for revenge? Willa will have to choose.
From the city to the countryside
When crossing a forest, she will also discover that danger does not only come from human beings… Indeed, insects with a shorter lifespan, adapted very quickly and experienced disproportionate growth. Farmers, led by Lucas Ferrano, trained butterflies to survive. This gives the opportunity for beautiful images evoking the science fiction of the 70s. But, unlike this period, the artist duo managed the feat of making this imaginary world realistic. Through everyday life, the screenwriter shows the adaptation of society. How to travel by train without passengers being thrown against the walls? Simply place the seats vertically against the wall. Lee Garbett's drawing also succeeds in rendering the absence of weightlessness by a perfect framing of the bodies. In addition, the layout discreetly upsets the perspectives. We can also understand the work of this duo as a bonus by double pages comparing the script and the corresponding page of 16 .
Everything is not so light…
Beyond this issue of realism, the story is also very modern by its integration of human diversity: the heroine is black, her companion Edison has his legs amputated… But that's never the subject of the book. We feel the formation of the filmmaker's film because a large part of the story goes through the image and dialogues without resorting to long texts. When a traveler thinks he has a scoop finds Willa hidden on the train. He reveals himself that he is not an investigator but a complacent journalist hungry for glory. However, he would have a lot of work because this world is full of secrets, most often linked to large companies – beware of what is on your plate … – but also intimate. Willa hides her father's secret from Edison who is in love with her without daring to tell him. In addition, he hides the origin of his family. In this second volume, Skyward continues to be a light series at first sight by building an imaginary world while being traversed by deep and current themes. The reader follows the path of Willa and Edison which will conclude in the next volume while waiting for the film in preparation.
