"Borat 2" review by Jason Woliner: Sacha Baron Cohen directed the sequence of the year

Borat is back. 14 years after the original, Sacha Baron Cohen returns as the Kazakh journalist, and returns to the United States. Borat 2: we take the same valves and start again

Borat 2 is not very original. Sacha Baron Cohen reuses the same facial expressions, the same situations, the same valves to tell this new story. The hidden cameras are back, as is the dubious humor of our hero. But this time, he takes his daughter with him. Exit the producer, this time, he will use the female figure to denounce the treatment of women under the Trump inauguration. Enough to create another dynamic. Which is enough to justify the realization of a sequel, and its differences with the first opus. The film, directed by Jason Woliner, offers some memorable moments. Like the first film, Sacha Baron Cohen is not afraid of anything, and offers some humorous passages of high flight, without being as impactful as in 2006. Borat 2 seems more anecdotal. The fault to less memorable sequences, or at least more expected, unlike the first film where the actor confronted for example conservative Texans in the middle of a rodeo or extreme religious on a Sunday morning in the middle of mass. Borat 2: A more accomplished achievement

Borat 2 is also carried by a more polished realization. This is surprising compared to the first film, shot in found footage with the means of the edge, which gave it an undeniable charm. Borat 2 is smoother. This gives the impression that the film is more staged than the first part, and thus loses its raison d'être. Fortunately, Sacha Baron Cohen imagines situations and some memorable comic moments. Like his hilarious passage with two conspiracy theorists in full confinement. Borat 2 is overall a successful entertainment, which allows an inquisitive look against Trump's policies.

Borat vs Trump

This is a bit the primary interest of this Borat 2. Sacha Baron Cohen is trying to offer a firebrand against Donald Trump's policy, a few days before the US elections. Not forgetting to recall that he rubbed (literally) in front of Trump Tower in the first film, Sacha Baron Cohen wants to discredit the outgoing president, by attacking his relatives. From this desire emerges two totally crazy sequences, which place Borat 2 as a corrosive, acerbic and critical production of Donald Trump's policy. The comedian does not hesitate to dress up as Donald Trump himself, the time of a truly hallucinating sequence where he arrives in a Mike Pence meeting. Dressed as the president, the comedian comes to interrupt the presentation of the vice president of the USA. A daring bet, political and committed movement, very quickly interrupted.

A truly mind-blowing sequence

But THE sequence of the film concerns Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, and lawyer of Donald Trump. Sacha Baron Cohen and Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat's daughter, tricked Rudy Giuliani, showing the world his inappropriate appetites for young women. Sacha Baron Cohen managed to take the politician red-handed. Maria Bakalova played his charms to fool him and take him on the spot. A risky bet, which paid off. A totally crazy sequence, and practically unimaginable. It's hard to believe that such a powerful man could have been fooled so simply. Observation of a society that is not ashamed of anything. He is filmed with his hand in his pants, apparently ready to have sex with the unofficially 15-year-old woman, before being interrupted by Sacha Baron Cohen. The 76-year-old politician quickly reacted and defended himself as best he could on social networks. He promises that this sequence of Sacha Baron Cohen is " fabricated" and that:

"I was putting my shirt back in my pants after removing the recording equipment. At no time before, during or after the interview did I behave inappropriately. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise, he is blatantly lylying. »

The scene created a buzz, and shows how corrupt, detestable and utterly reprehensible the political milieu is. Sacha Baron Cohen did not hesitate to add a layer after this statement by Rudy Giuliani. The comedian returned to the skin of Borat for a short video where he defends the politician.
