After the success of Batman Metal and Last knight on Earth, the duo Snyder and Capullo offers you a new saga with Batman Death Metal released by Urban comics. Are you ready to follow them in their renovation of the DC comics universe?

Death Metal, Another Earth

At the beginning of the first volume of Batman Death Metal, the forces of good failed. The Batman Who Laughs has won against the greatest heroes. He was a superhero but he killed an opponent. From then on, he is contaminated with the toxin of the joker. Having become a monster, he allies himself with twilight gods: through Barbatos he recruits the dark Batmen of other dimensions and then with Perpetua he accesses a new source of power transforming the Earth in his image. The Batman Who Laughs has subjugated or made disappear all the heroes…. but the real Bat Knight refuses to surrender while Wonder Woman dreams of a revenge. Indeed, superheroes have a diversity of approaches. On the one hand, Wonder Woman has become the head guard in the prison cave for supervillains. It is believed that she has turned to evil but she is preparing a strategy and, while waiting for better days, hides her true motives. On the other hand, Bruce fights openly with every means possible. As often at DC comics, it is the Flashes that can change things. Batman Death Metal: Scott Snyder goes even further

Another DC comics

The volume begins with three episodes composed by the duo Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. If the hero of Gotham is present, Death Metal goes further by creating a whole new reality. The two authors reinvent DC by plunging the heroes into the Gothic. Cartoonist Greg Capullo is having fun like crazy with a completely burned Swamp Thing. The reader enjoys seeing the multiple Batmen of the most anticipated or most obscure (a T. Rex Batman). Snyder even breaks all the codes of DC – Wonder Woman is no longer an heiress of the ancient soldiers but she is armed with a mini-chainsaw. For the fan, there are many allusions to the continuity of DC comics: the Justice Society of America, the first team of superheroes guards the vault of dead superheroes. Sergeant Rock, symbol of veterans of the foreign wars of the United States since the 70s, is happy to return to the fight… even if it is missing half of the body below the pelvis. The screenwriter intervenes both on Earth and in space. Perpetua conquers universes while the Batmen impose themselves on the original universe perverted by the Batman Who Laughs. By going in all directions, the screenwriter sometimes loses the reader who has trouble finding a common thread.

Batman: an expanding universe

The last two episodes are a compilation of episodes of a few pages around the universe of Death Metal. The Batmen conquered Earth in a week because of the division of heroes. These pages allow neophytes to discover these characters and fans to learn more about all these Batmen. In King Robin, Bruce Wayne was born a psychopath and it was he who killed his parents. Separated by texts describing the new Earth, these collective episodes bring together all the most prominent writers – James Tynion IV, Garth Ennis, Joshua Williamson, Marguerite Bennett, Chip Zdarsky – and star cartoonists – Francesco Francavilla, Daniel Warren Johnson, Joëlle Jones and Eduardo Risso. With such a variety of artists, the result is necessarily uneven but it is also a chance for fans of comics the opportunity to discover very different graphic styles including the beautiful pages of Daniel Warren Johnson who mixes Mad Max and Terminator. We can also mention the excellent episode of Vita Alaya and Dan Panosian. Batman Death Metal: Scott Snyder goes even further Batman Death Metal is a pure comic book action blockbuster. The makeover in Hellefest mode is very beautiful, the action does not stop and impresses (like a giant robot coming out of Earth) but the subject is sometimes a little simple. Death Metal is the example that a great freedom that becomes anything. If you are a fan of Gotham defender, Urban comics has also released the first volume of Joker War which you will find the chronicle on this link.
