For this new review, we have found the ideal Netflix series for your evenings by the fire. Let's immerse ourselves in the magical and colorful world of the intrepid Hilda. The British-Canadian animated series has been available on Netflix since 2018, and counts (for now!) two seasons.
A simple story and touching characters
Hilda is a fearless little girl. Stubborn, curious, she will stop at nothing to discover the world around her… Even if this world is populated by trolls, ghosts and other creatures straight out of a fantasy novel! The day when, tired of the woods, her mother decides to move to the city, it is the beginning of a new era of adventures for the girl. Accompanied by Brindille, her half-fox half-deer companion, and his faithful friends Frida and David, she will meet witches, demons and elves, solve mysteries and thwart many traps.
An enchanting universe in a unique graphic style
The main asset of this series is obviously its universe and its bestiary. The creatures encountered throughout the episodes recall the imaginary universe of our childhood. Tiny elves mingle with trolls or stone giants fearing the light. We discover a whole part of the folklore of Scandinavian tales from Iceland and Norway, with, for example, the nisses, protectors of the home living in the hidden spaces of the houses… Everything is good to continue to keep a childish spirit and keep the magic, even in the heart of the big city of Trollburg. In addition to its endearing characters, the series is intended to be entertaining and educational with over the episodes some well-felt lessons. She advocates the beautiful values of friendship, devotion, honesty and benevolence. Each character and each plot is treated with accuracy and realism while keeping a part of fantasy. The other undeniable asset is the colors and the general atmosphere given to the drawing. The graphic palette is soft, fits perfectly with the universe of the series. We find the "comic" effect of flat colors, which remind us that Hilda, basically, is above all a comic book.
A series for all audiences
If it is apparently aimed at a young audience fond of animated series, everyone can easily find his account. In many ways, the Hilda series is reminiscent of Adventure Time or Big Mouth, two monuments with a very specific audience and a singular graphic touch. …More childish certainly, but which is very easy to look at. In addition, the French dubbing gives an additional interest, with a very well chosen cast, even if little known. Of particular note is the fresh and adorable interpretation of young David by Dorothée Pousséo (the voice actress of Vanellope von Schweetz and Harley Quinn… among others!). An animated feature film is in preparation, pending season 3 which should appear around 2022. If you want to discover a very young fantasy animated series in a colorful universe, Hilda is worth a visit!
