1 hour from Toulouse is Foix, a medieval city in Ariège, the second smallest prefecture in France and yet full of treasures.
What to visit in Foix?
The incomparable Château de Foix
The construction of this fortress began around the year one thousand. Surrounded by mountains, it was built in height, a strategic point to dominate the city and have a permanent eye on possible enemies. Still majestic today, it is possible to visit it and even climb to the top of the dungeons. The stunning view of the mountains is breathtaking. Namely, several rooms of the castle served as prisons, one can read on the walls words engraved in stone and traces of handcuffs that testify to this time. Workshops are offered to visitors within the castle, making the visit fully immersive. Medieval weapons, forge, stone cutting, a journey into the past accentuated by the costumes of the castle employees! To learn more about the history of the Counts of Foix, an interactive museum of 2000m² is installed at the foot of the castle. Fun and educational, it will appeal to the youngest as well as the oldest. And precisely, a temporary exhibition traces the history of the sword by focusing on history and cinema. Star Wars, Game of Thrones or Harry Potter are honored. The exhibition " Legendary Swords – From Excalibur to Lightsaber " is on display until November 6, 2022.
The Terrasses du Pech de Foix
The Labouiche River
A few kilometers from Foix is Labouiche, the longest navigable underground river in Europe! A nice journey of 1.5 kilometers, where we are surrounded by limestone statues. A cavity that can be visited by boat, perfect to cool off in the middle of summer.
The budget for a weekend in Foix
We slept in a fully equipped accommodation in the center of Foix named Castle Spa. The host Laurence was particularly warm and the accommodation enjoys a sublime view of the castle. Count about 160 € the two nights. For restaurants, lunch formulas are particularly reasonable, you can count 20 € per person for a complete menu. In the evening we opted for the kitchen in the apartment! From Paris, we took the train to Toulouse and then to Foix, the round trip cost us 80 € per person. Thus, it takes about 200 € for three days two nights in Foix. But if, like us, you want to continue the adventure, take the train to Latour-de-Carol and board the Yellow Train!
