In these early days of the Dungeon universe, the incessant wars between orcs and elves kill humans but not only… the war also concerns their pets in the Dungeon Antipodes series by Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim published by Delcourt.
A duo that has a dog
This series of the Dungeon universe stands out clearly from the main series because the heroes are dogs. A battle has just ended, and as a bulldog belonging to an orc fighter mourns his master, he encounters his worst nightmare, an elf dog. This tough guy gets a shock when his master dies. He then realizes the horror of war and discovers feelings because he is the only one to be sad about the death of his master. Worse, this fighting dog must associate with this pet dog of an elf. Indeed, for the molosser, distinguished elves are ridiculous dolls. He dreams of equality and fighting. On the contrary, the elf dog dreams only of living in luxury and being served. At the end of a road trip, the duo founded the army of the skull… with two and the little dog manages to be obeyed by the big brute in this volume.
Humans so stupid
In the first volume of Dungeon Antipodes – these two four-legged heroes have gradually learned to ally. Orphans, each will try to find a place among the Orcs in the first volume and the Elves in this one. However, they are still rejected and misunderstood. These animals learn to fend for themselves to escape the violence of other peoples. Indeed, in this story written by Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim centered on animals, they do not stop communicating with humans in vain. It is by snorting a powder that they will succeed. However, "humans" are all despicable. In the first volume, they met orc cooks, loquacious hordes who rob corpses, a mermaid. In this new volume, we discover the interrogator who does not hesitate to any black magic to learn more about our murderous dogs without realizing that they have just arrived at his home. We therefore follow in parallel the investigation of two agents of the questioner (transformed into giant flying scorpions by their boss) and the incredible domestic adventures of dogs at the questioner. In this volume, we find the mage that everyone takes for an enlightened … while he understood the theory of evolution and pacifism. He advocated a panspeciesist doctrine. We discover a little more about his sect that wants to give voice to animals to create peace between species because everything is screwed for the "monkeys". To implement his plan, he decides to start with dragons.
From start to finish
Over the years and the success of the original series, the Dungeon has pushed the walls with six series and twenty cartoonists. In Antipodes, the objective is to go back to the very beginning of the universe with these barbarian ages but also in the present. Indeed, another volume, Antipodes +, illustrated by Vince takes place in a universe resembling ours… but with a duck. Antipodes – takes place 10,000 volumes before the original series in a wilder world. In this distant past, life is harsh for humans and animals like dogfights without a master in an arena. This new series marks the arrival of cartoonist Grégory Panaccione (Un océan d'amour, Chronosquad). Her style is sometimes reminiscent of Joann Sfar. There are childish shapes, round but a thick inking and many lines. This expressive element is amplified by highly contrasting and varied colors in a dark atmosphere. He also makes beautiful pages with dragons. With this second volume, Antipodes – goes beyond the simple joke about talking animals to gradually tell the origins of Dungeon. The reader gradually feels that a plan is emerging but it may bleed… You can also find chronicles on the latest volume of Dungeon Monster on this link and another series of heroic fantasy by Trondheim.
