On February 3rd, the publishing house Glénat released Volume 1 and 2 of One Piece: Stampede. These are the manga/comic book adaptations of the 2019 animated film by Japanese director Takashi Otsuka. This feature film celebrates twenty years of Japanese anime based on an original story written by author Eiichiro Oda. Return of the old enemies

For the adaptation in comics format, we find the publisher Jump Comics. It offers fans impressive fights, moments of emotion and surprising alliances. We find in this volume 1, a multitude of protagonists of the One Piece universe. In addition to the crew of the straw hat, fans will be able to appreciate the presence of mythical characters from the original story. We find Baggy, Crocodile, Vice Admiral Smoker and Tashigi. The terrible generation is also present with Killer, Eustass Kidd, Trafalgar Law, Jewelry Bonney, X-Drake, Scratchmen Apoo, Basil Hawkins, Capone Bege and Urouge. As well as the new characters of the film, Douglas Bullet (former member of Roger's crew), Donald Moderato (the master of ceremonies), Ann (special guest of the Pirate Fest) and Buena Festa (organizer of the Pirate Fest). The new characters introduced in the Pirate Fest universe are very interesting because of their liabilities and powers. The two most striking protagonists in this story are Douglas Bullet and Buena Festa. By discovering them over the pages, we can only hope that they will be integrated into the next chapter of One Piece. Douglas Bullet is a former member of Roger's crew, he allows to introduce the former king of pirates in the comics and also, to have a new villain of size in the manner of Thanos. The character of Buena Festa is the puppeteer behind every decision made in the Pirate Fest, he is Douglas Bullet's companion. The idea of having someone pulling the strings makes the story of One Piece: Stampede captivating and surprising. This line-up is surprising because it brings together characters who have marked the original story of the manga. Like Baggy, Crocodile or Vice-Admiral Smoker. The presence of all these protagonists underlines why One Piece: Stampede was created: to please the fans! Therefore, one can't help but wonder if it's really worth reading this story knowing that it doesn't really exist in the original plot. Well, we confirm that yes, it's worth it because it's not every day that you can enjoy a good plot, beautiful drawings and a gathering of characters as great as those who are gathered in this comic. It's 100% fan service

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, does not deny it, he claims it! The fan service in One Piece: Stampede is very well imaged and written by the duo Takashi Otsuka and Atsuhiro Tomioka. With this anime comics, new readers of One Piece will be able to enjoy this comic without having to read the many chapters of the original manga. This is a good alternative because it would be impossible to have time to read everything. And it could also help expand the fanbase. One Piece: Stampede Volume 1 is something of a special issue. It allows you to take a side road when reading the original manga and then resume it without being confused. Reading this comic, I found myself wanting Pirate Fest to be integrated into One Piece just like the new characters.

A successful adaptation?

Yes, it is a successful adaptation because the magic of the One Piece universe is present on every page. When reading volume 1 of One Piece: Stampede, I was not very comfortable with the presence of colors because being a fan of manga, I like black and white. But I surprised myself to appreciate this visual because it allows me to appreciate even more the subtlety of the drawings and the impressive fight scenes. In this comic, we find our favorite characters who participate in the Pirate Fest. Knowing this, one cannot help but quickly read the first pages to come across an introductory or gathering scene. The animated film One Piece: Stampede is originally created to celebrate the twenty years of existence of the manga anime. With this book, the celebration continues by combining the colors of the anime and the format of a classic manga. The editors of Just Focus recommend that you read Volume 1 of One Piece: Stampede and why not, continue reading the adventures of the straw hat crew with the Volume 2. Anime fans will find themselves there with these colorful drawings and multiple impressive fight scenes. Manga fans will also not be disappointed by this Volume 1 because despite the absence of black and white, the magic of the One Piece universe is intact.
