Here are some recommended books, including one by Julien Fontanier. So let's start with this one: Kanji & Kana. According to Julien Fontanier, this book is the bible of Japanese. 
In it, we find all the official kanji used in Japan with their pronunciation and some examples of use. It contains, as you can see, 2141 official characters. Admittedly, it is a large number but it will be useful for you to decode any kanji. This "bible" obviously (and unfortunately) has a price. It is 40 euros, buyable in supermarkets. A book called The Japanese for Dummies, does exist!
