The plot :

In the near future, the combination of environmental pollution and sexually transmitted diseases has led to a dramatic decline in fertility resulting in an extremely low birth rate. The "Sons of Jacob", a Protestant politico-religious sect of the restorationist type and fundamentalist overtones, took advantage of this to take power, destroying the White House, the Supreme Court and Congress in a coup. In this dystopian and totalitarian society with a very low birth rate, women are divided into three categories: the Brides, who dominate the house, the Marthas, who maintain it, and the Handmaids, whose role is reproduction.  Capture décran 2022 03 30 à 16.55.35 A servant really like no other!

Impressions :

The first word that comes to us is "wow"!!! This extraordinary dystopian scenario, based on the eponymous novel by Margaret Atwood, will not leave you indifferent. For sure, you will witness a season that will fly by in a snap of your fingers. Because with its 10 episodes of less than an hour each, we evolve in an addictive climate … and pernicious to say the least! Slave and surrogate mother, June Osborne (Mad men), who has become in spite of herself, Defred (contraction of the name of his new owner) will have to learn to survive in a world (created by religious fanatics) that has taken his family, his work and his human condition. The people she knew are now prisoners or missing. The hostility that reigns does not allow him to flee. In the house of his captors, all are in collusion (driver, maidservants, the mistress of the house, the commander, the marthas…). To find her daughter Hannah and her husband Luke, June/Defred will have to agree to blackmail, humiliation, rape, guilt and torture. Helped by Nick whom she initially suspects of being an eye (Gilead's spy), she will resist and experience love again. She will have to ignore the freedom she once knew and discover, at her expense, the price to pay to regain her and protect her family. Indisputable fact: disobedience is paid dearly in the kingdom of Gilead (the name of this new world) and no matter what excuses are made. The lull in times of resignation is opposed to the strong agitation of moments of rebellion. They are also the spearheads of the "disturbing" climate of the "scarlet servant". Know it now, no scene of physical or psychological violence will be spared you. Stoning, excision, rape, electrocution, hanging, oppression are the prices to pay for insubordination. The flashbacks return to the bygone era of "the good life", give a bitter and futuristic aftertaste of what we might one day experience. The realization here testifies to the anxiety that must have reigned during the Trump presidency when the fate of women was not the most… Gratifying. An America at the time disturbing like each opus of this series. So clairvoyance or fiction? In any case, the discomfort increases as one progresses in the adventure. How many of these entities tortured daily will manage to "hold on" and survive their condition as slaves? Janine? Emily? Deglen? Moira? This servant has not only scarlet the distinctive color of her toga raising her to the rank of fertilizable doll, but also the blood she will flow. As you will have understood, we would certainly have seen more cheerful in terms of script but, observing the violence that creates the common thread of each episode, we suspect that the scenario is based on a story that is fundamentally feminist. Strong, contradictory feelings take us to the guts when we realize that this "new" mostly patriarchal world was the initiative of a… Wife! Each new event then falls, like a cleaver, warning of an upcoming tragedy. The viewer must integrate the rhythm imposed by Gilead and its polite phrases taken from biblical quotations. Only conversations allowed to the maids ("May the Lord open", "Blessed be the fruit" to pray for the fertility of another servant, "we have been sent good weather"…) become familiar as the insults "gender traitors" (aimed at gays and lesbians), "unwomen" (to talk about the infertile). Capture décran 2022 03 30 à 16.52.44 A servant really like no other! Whether or not we appreciate the ingredients of this series released in 2017, one thing is sure ladies, the "Handmaid's Tale" may give you to think, or even to revise your vision of childbirth and the place of women in our current world. A very special mention for the playlist a bit "anachronistic" that makes each generic a renewed pleasure. Fourth season currently airing in France (ocs).
